Why is their good and evil and why should our mind be the arbitrator?
Why is their good and evil and why should our mind be the arbitrator?
Good and evil are but a natural combination of the basic nature of a human being. We are not all good and not all evil. But, you must have observed, reading into history, the two paradoxes stand in complete opposition.
Man is persuaded by one or the other. He is dissuaded from one or the other. We have not the faintest idea where these two tendencies come from. Unless you are a believer in God it is extremely difficult to pin down exactly the origin of these two tendencies in man.
We feel the two tendencies in opposition working their temptations on ourselves. They are inner feelings and inner drives. We have to give way to one or the other. If you do good and save a child's life from drowning you are a good person. But if you are a Hitler, and how many are there of Hitlers everywhere in every domain of life and in every society, God only knows.
So take your bid! After all, you are provided with a brain, unless you are a real donkey on two legs and do not know what you are doing, nor feel any harm in having a well developed Oedipus complex, and feel naturally the difference between good and evil and have enough will power to go either way.
We all feel somehow, by our inner natural impulse, or the voice of God within, that our actions, thoughts and feelings sometimes bad and sometimes are good. We sense naturally whether what we are doing is morally oriented and its is a good thing or an evil thing.
Our mind is our own arbitrator between good and bad. Our will is the tool for realizing one or the other. We have to choose and here we have the freedom of choice to go either way. Our motivation can be hushed down by our interest. Interest, whether self-interest or communal interest, dictates sometimes the end justifies the means but how evil is this most of the time?
Our mind is made the final judge to decide whether an act, or thought, is a good one or an evil one.
This is the case because of our total responsibility for our deeds and thoughts, beliefs and choices. Our responsibility gives directionality to our lives. We are forced to take either way and choose between good and evil. We have no choice but to go either way.
If this is coupled with the idea of our life-cycle, life and death, then there must be a final purpose for having the two opposite tendencies within. This is so for we shall be judged some time and some where for our actions, being good or evil ones. With the prospect of a final judgment, making the totality of our deeds in either black or white, this explains our own individual responsibility.
Would not be a final judgment be very plausible for such a responsibility and such a paradoxical opposition within every man?
If man is a mere robot then his good and evil cannot be held responsible for his judgment. If man is forced, or programmed, to choose either then judgment is unnecessary and unjust. Man must have the two namely good and evil with the mind as an arbitrator and the will power to go either way, in order to be justly brought to justice and judged and then sentenced to hell fire or to paradise.
